The Alignment Problem
A common mistake in instructional design is assessment misalignment.
For example, if your objective is: "The learner will be able to repair a broken engine." (Creating/Applying level).
If your assessment is: "A multiple-choice quiz asking the learner to identify the parts of an engine." (Remembering level).
The learner may pass the quiz, but you have no proof they can actually repair the engine. Your assessment is misaligned.
Constructive Alignment
Coined by John Biggs, this principle means your Learning Objectives, your Teaching Activities, and your Assessments must all be perfectly matched to the same cognitive level.
