How to Calculate Training ROI

Return on Investment (ROI) measures the financial return on an investment relative to its cost. In L&D, it represents Kirkpatrick's Level 5 evaluation.

Total Training Cost: Includes direct costs (development) and indirect costs (the value of the employees' time spent away from work).

Cost = Dev Costs + (Participants × Hours × Wage)

Net Benefit: The total financial gain from the training minus the total cost.

Net Benefit = Total Benefit - Total Cost

ROI Percentage: The net benefit expressed as a percentage of the total cost.

ROI % = (Net Benefit / Total Cost) × 100

Quantifying soft skills training is challenging. Try isolating the effects of training by comparing trained vs. untrained groups, or calculating the time saved by a new process.
