Project overview
Context
The L&D team of a mid-size technology company had been outsourcing all video production to an external agency. The videos were good, but the process was slow (6–8 weeks per video), expensive, and created a bottleneck: internal knowledge moved faster than the agency could keep up with.
The Head of L&D wanted to bring basic video production in-house — not Hollywood quality, but professional enough to use in the LMS and consistent enough to maintain over time. The team had Camtasia licences but no one had been trained on them.
The challenge
- Team had zero previous video production experience — starting from scratch
- Camtasia licences installed but unused — no one knew where to begin
- Previous attempts at DIY video had produced inconsistent, off-brand results
- Team needed practical skills, not theory — they had a backlog of 10+ videos waiting
- Participants had varying technical confidence — design had to accommodate the least technical member
- No established workflow or templates — everything needed to be built and left with the team
Workshop agenda
Day 1 — Instructional Foundation
- Why most learning videos fail (and how to avoid it)
- Mayer's Multimedia Learning Principles — applied
- Writing for the ear: voiceover script fundamentals
- Practical: write and peer-review a 3-minute script
- Storyboarding for video — shot types, scene annotations
- Practical: storyboard a real video from the backlog
- Introduction to Camtasia interface and workflow overview
Day 2 — Camtasia Production
- Recording screencasts — best practices, settings, common mistakes
- Practical: each participant records their storyboarded segment
- Editing fundamentals: cuts, callouts, zoom, lower thirds
- Audio: recording, cleaning, and music/ambient sound
- Brand consistency: custom Camtasia theme setup
- Export settings for LMS, web, and internal distribution
- Practical: complete and export a finished 3-minute video
Deliverables
- 2-day facilitated workshop with fully scripted facilitator guide and participant workbook
- Camtasia project template — branded, pre-configured for the client's visual identity
- Script writing template (Word) — covers structure, timing, and VO direction notes
- Storyboard template with scene-type guidance notes
- Production checklist — from brief to exported video
- Brand guide for video — colours, fonts, callout styles, approved music sources
- Export presets for three delivery contexts (LMS, intranet, YouTube)
- Post-workshop job aid pack — quick reference for every key Camtasia workflow
Outcomes
- First team-produced video published to LMS within 2 weeks of the workshop
- 6 videos produced in-house within 90 days — down from 6–8 weeks per video to ~1 week
- All participants rated their Camtasia confidence as 4 or 5 out of 5 in post-workshop survey (pre-workshop average: 1.2)
- External agency contract not renewed — full video production brought in-house for standard formats
- Video quality rated as "equivalent to previously outsourced content" by the Head of L&D
